It's Saturday
1. We did it! We made it to summer break! I survived my first full year as Development Director. Enrollment is down and I can't get anyone to sign up for our next two fundraisers, so I'm basically a failure, but they're still paying me, so I'll keep trying! The kids finished strong. All three of them ended the year with all A's, with the exception of Levi's spelling grade. But he got it up from a D at the beginning of the year to a B- by the end, so I'll take it!
2. One of Levi's final assignments was to bring in a dessert that is a family recipe. He chose my mom's peanut butter cookies, which I've made multiple times. This time, however, was a disaster.
3. This week I scrolled through all my 5-star books on Goodreads and wondered to myself if I'd still rate them that highly since I read some of them 15-20 years ago. So I picked out two from the list (Secrets and Unforgotten by Kristen Heitzmann) and re-read them. Sad news: they weren't as good this time around. The main characters are in their mid twenties - as I was when I originally read them. But now, at the advanced age of 40, I can't help but be annoyed by the unnecessary drama. Haha. Maybe I should stop revisiting books of the past, and just remember them fondly.
4. I did an experiment this week to really take notice of what I'm consuming on facebook. Tuesday morning, I made my coffee, opened my facebook app, and wrote down the first 15 things that came across my feed. They are as follows:
- A post from my town's communication page
- An article from Fox 17 that I clicked on yesterday
- Another Fox 17 article
- Olight ad (I have never been on their website, looked them up, or bought anything from them, but Justin buys stuff from them all the time - on his own phone, not mine. But with our shared credit card?)
- Another Olight ad
- An opinion post from Allie Beth Stuckey - I do not follow her, but I've probably clicked on her stuff before
- A post from Matt Droguett Life Counseling about living on the road with kids - never heard of him, and don't have any interest in road life
- Best Buy ad (I haven't bought anything from them in years)
- A post from a person I don't know about Spencer Pratt (mayoral candidate in California)
- An opinion post from someone I don't know about reformed churches in Grand Rapids. (I googled a few churches to look up VBS dates earlier this week)
- Another Olight ad!
- Finally - my first post from a friend!
- Another post from a friend
- Meijer ad
- Chat GPT ad
This is out of control. I have 476 facebook friends, and yet the majority of my feed is ads and opinions from people I don't even know. I've been overwhelmed lately with the onslaught of opinions that are constantly thrown in my face thanks to the Internet. Is it any wonder that we're so polarized as a society and no one can get along? Everyone has to share their opinion about everything all the time! So here I am, to declare my opinion about the excess of opinions. 😁
This idea has been tumbling around in my brain for a while, but has really come into focus over the past couple of weeks with the SBC ban on women pastors. Wow. People have thoughts. And it's funny that it happens to be this issue in particular, because my sisters and I have had a lot of dialog recently about how to know which passages of the Bible can be "dismissed" as "cultural," and the rules for women has been one of our foremost conversations. In our post-truth culture, I'm immediately wary of anyone who says, "That doesn't apply to us anymore" in reference to the Bible. And yet, I don't wear a head covering when I pray, so I obviously adopt that stance on certain topics. So it's discouraging, as I wrestle with this issue, to be inundated with so many conflicting opinions. On one side, my ultra-conservative friends are calling women pastors false teachers who are leading their congregations to hell. And on the other side, my ultra-progressive friends are saying, "See? This is why Christians are so awful. They oppress women!" And don't even get me started on the recent Sheila Wray Gregoire drama! I think this is the crux of the matter . . . when I see everyone sharing their opinion on hot-button issues like this, I feel like I have to choose a side. I feel like I have to research both sides until I reach a decision, then I need to share that decision publicly - and in a way that makes everyone on the wrong side realize how right I am. Typing that makes me want to throw my phone in a lake and go live in a hobbit hole with my Bible and some potatoes. I'm so tired of it all!
5. And now . . . some pics and memes
We still haven't finished renovating Levi's room after the leak debacle, so we put a mattress in Justin's catch-all room. Levi and Stella both enjoy it!
